The Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame is located inside the Centennial Community Centre. It opened in 1967 and is home to both of Canada's top lacrosse trophies, the Minto Cup and the Mann Cup.

The Justice Institute of British Columbia is a higher learning institution for justice, public safety and social services. It is home to the police academy where all municipal police officers in the province must undergo basic training. Paramedics, rescue personnel and security officers also undergo training at the institute.

The former British Columbia Penitentiary opened in 1878 and operated for 102 years until it closed in 1980. It was the first Canadian federal penitentiary west of Manitoba. The same site previously housed the Royal Engineers, the founders of the city that became the first capital of the colony of British Columbia. The majority of the penitentiary was torn down with the exception of two buildings, including the Gatehouse (pictured), which is now used for commercial purposes.

The former New Westminster Station was once a station of a passenger and freight line on the Canadian Pacific Railway. The original building was destroyed in a fire in 1899 and was rebuilt immediately after, which exists to this day. Currently, the historic building is home to The Keg restaurant and steakhouse.

Woodlands Provincial School opened in 1878 as a mental health institution. In the 1930s, it changed its focus from a care facility to an educational facility for those with developmental disabilities. After becoming one of the largest institutions of its kind, it closed in 1996 but around 2000, allegations of abuse began to surface. In 2008, a large fire (the largest in the city's history) destroyed most of the buildings on the site, except for the center block (pictured). On October 18, 2011, the center block was finally demolished; today, none of the Woodlands buildings are still standing.

Queen's Park Arena was built in 1930 and is the former home of both incarnations of the New Westminster Bruins of the Western Hockey League and current home of the New Westminster Salmonbellies of the Western Lacrosse League. It has the only wooden floor for lacrosse in the world.

New Westminster's waterfront has the world's largest tin man soldier, as recognized by the Guinness World Records; it is 32 feet (9.75 meters) tall and weighs 5 tons (4500 kilograms). It was unveiled in 2000 and moved to its present location next to the River Market in 2001. Its design was modeled after the Royal Engineers who founded the city.

MV Samson V is the last paddlewheel steamboat to operate in Canada. It is currently a floating maritime museum in New Westminster along the Fraser River, which was once famous for its paddlewheel steamboats during the gold rush in the 19th century.

New Westminster is the first city and capital of the Colony of British Columbia from 1858 to 1866; it lost its capital city status to Victoria when British Columbia added Vancouver Island to its holdings. It was named by the Queen of England, which led to the city's nickname, "The Royal City." It was also a major economic center during the Fraser River Gold Rush, but its importance was soon surpassed by the new city of Vancouver. Today, Columbia Street (pictured) is the primary commercial strip of the city.

Connecting the cities of New Westminster and Surrey in British Columbia, the Skybridge crosses the Fraser River and is the longest cable-supported transit-only bridge in the world. It is part of the Expo Line of the SkyTrain system in Metro Vancouver. The bridge towers are 404 feet (123 meters) tall and the trains travel 150 feet (45 meters) above the water. It was built between 1987 and 1989, and runs nearly parallel to neighboring Pattullo Bridge.
